Featured Designer: Accessories by Abiye

This weeks' featured designer is Accessories by Abiye.  These designs are fun, unique and full of color.  I love the extensive use of bright fabrics, rhinestones and pearls.  It gives each piece a fun yet elegant feel.

I had the opportunity to Abiye, owner of Accessories by Abiye,  some questions about how she got started making accessories and what inspires her.  The most amazing thing about this designer is that she is able to create such beautiful designs and run her business all while she is finishing up a PhD program in Prostate Cancer Immunology.  I think that's pretty amazing!  Find out more about Abiye below.

How did you come up with the Name of your Shop?

At the time, ‘Accessories by Abiye’ was a natural name to call my line because they were all fashion
accessories handmade by me. I’ve always had a long-standing fascination with fashion accessories because of how they can easily transform any basic outfit. Also, accessorising was a key aspect of my personal style and I wanted that to be evident in my line.

Tell us a little bit about your shop and what you think makes it unique?
There’s a fashion trend at the moment utilising African prints to make clothes and jewelry, but I felt there was nothing special about any of them. I wanted to make accessories that although are inspired by my African heritage, can be worn with everyday Western outfits to create the ‘African-meets-Western’ look.

Accessories by Abiye hand makes and customises jewellery – earrings, bangles, necklaces, hair accessories, brooches, and other accessories such bow ties, handbags, clutch bags and shoes. We also hand make men’s bow ties, pocket squares and cufflinks.

How did you get started in your craft?
I have always had a passion for customising, creating and designing things especially jewellery. I taught myself how to hand-make fashion accessories as a hobby in October 2012. A friend of mine wore some of my items at a few events and people saw them and loved them. ‘Accessories by Abiye’ was launched soon after that, around mid-December 2012.
