Featured Designer: Shear Anarchy

This week's featured designer is from Woodstock, GA.  Shear Anarchy is designer that collects t-shirts and other used materials and turns them into awesome messenger bags, purses and other fun accessories.
I had the opportunity to talk with Jen, owner of Shear Anarchy, about her designs and her company.
I love hearing how designers got started in their crafts.  I have heard so many interesting stories and I feel that it really allows the rest of us to connect and have a greater understanding of the designer and their products.  Here is a little about Jen and the creation of Shear Anarchy.

How did you come up with the Name of your Shop?
What we do is rescue t-shirts and other textiles and give them new life. We cut them up to create "new" and useful items that are fun and unexpected. So "Shear Anarchy Textile Rescue" is the perfect name. It took us a while to come up with just the right name, but it perfectly fits with what we do and who we are.

Tell us a little about your shop and what you think makes it unique?
We absolutely love that our rescued t-shirts and textiles can have this second life as something completely different! Our process starts with a trip to local (and not so local) thrift stores. We search through hundreds of t-shirts and textiles to rescue items that can be transformed into one of our products. We look at the size of prints on t-shirts and the quality of the shirt and textile. We then plan out what each t-shirt and/or textile's "new" life will be. They are lovingly cleaned, cut, prepped and made into SHEAR ANARCHY. Most of our items are made from 100% upcycled materials. Though some small additions that are not rescued may be added to enhance the product's usability.

What is your favorite item at the store and why?
Most of the time it's the last thing I make and post. I want to keep everything for myself! But, the latest thing I absolutely love is the Upcycled Shaun of the Dead Messenger bag. Who doesn't love Shaun of the Dead!?!

How did you get started in your craft?
Our interest in upcycling t-shirts and textiles started with a realization of the incredible amount of waste produced by the textile industry. Nick, a screen-printer of over 20 years, commented on the problem and we both decided it was time for a change. Suddenly a great idea was born! Instead of letting these items go to waste, we decided to reintroduce them to society in a new (and dare I say better?) form.

Where can we find you?
Our Etsy shop is our main shop

We are also on Facebook
Official site

We are located in Atlanta, GA - so you can also find us touring around and setting up shop at local events. If you’re in the area of one of our shows, stop on by. We’d love to see you!

Anything else you would like to share about you?
We also do custom orders. So, if you have a t-shirt or other textile item you love but can't wear any more, let us know. Don’t let some narrow-minded person convince you to throw your beloved item in the trash. We will work with you on the perfect design and function to make it "new" again!

I think that this is such a great idea!  Such a great way to personalize a gift or use that beloved shirt in a new and fun way :-)

Jen has been so kind to offer all Melvin Avenue readers a special discount.  Please use discount code MELVINAVENUE for 10% off your entire purchase at their
